Over 50 young people and their families celebrated the launch of a fantastic new study club in Tower Hamlets recently. Swan has teamed up with the Inspire Academy to offer innovative educational sessions for young people who live on or near the Blackwall Reach estate in East London. Funded by a generous grant from Cory Energy, the Study Support Club offers small group sessions to young people aged 8-16 (groups are arranged by age and limited to just ten young people) to support their learning.
There are currently thirty young people attending the weekly sessions every Sunday. The sessions are carefully planned so that they expand on what the young people learn at school. The Inspire Team are confident that young people who regularly attend the Study Support Club will develop a deeper understanding of the core national curriculum subjects, enhance their examination grades and ultimately, expand their aspirations for the future!
The sessions are delivered at "The Reach" the new multi-purpose community facility created in the first phase of the £300m Blackwall Reach regeneration which Swan is delivering in partnership with London Borough of Tower Hamlets and The Mayor of London and the event was also attended by both Swan and LBTH staff. There are a full range of activities provided every week at The Reach for local people managed by Swan's Resident Involvement and Community Development Team.
Sandra Fawcett, Executive Director, Swan Housing Association said:
"It's been fantastic to meet the young people who are giving up their Sunday afternoons so enthusiastically to attend the study group. We are delighted that, with the generous support of Cory Energy, we have been able to meet residents' request to bring Inspire Academy to the Reach and we can't wait to hear about the progress the children make over the coming months.
We are committed to creating opportunities for all our residents to reach their full potential and hope that this is just the start of a great relationship with our partners that will help even more children achieve so much more!"
Nicholas Pollard, Group CEO of Cory Energy said:
"As soon as we heard about this proposed project from Swan Housing back in the summer of 2017 we wanted to be involved because of the potential to benefit so many children in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Making the most of your time at school is essential if you want to make the most of the rest of your life - living it to the full, able to do whatever you find inspiring, fulfilling your true potential. What a privilege it is for us to support this work!"
