Hard hats at the ready and armed with questions, members of the public went behind the hoardings at Blackwall Reach, as NU living - Swan Housing Association’s in-house construction company - led a tour of the site as a part of Considerate Constructors national ‘Open Doors’ event - an initiative to showcase the fantastic range of careers available in the construction industry.
Eager to learn more about Blackwall Reach, the tour, which took place on 8 October, saw a variety of individuals attend including a retired school teacher and software developer students. There were four guests in total keen to find out more about the Blackwall Reach regeneration project.
Following a health and safety induction, the visitors were given an insight into the progress that has been made on site through the different stages - from an empty reinforced concrete frame to the installation of the façades precast concrete panels, and an element of internal works. They were then shown around the development, including three viewing points, while being talked through the processes and progress of this immense project.
Keen to explore career opportunities for those in the area, Swan Housing Association recently collaborated with the local council and the Workspath scheme, to give local people the opportunity to apply for positions advertised. This was explained to the visitors on the tour, as well as sharing information about the latest apprenticeship scheme from the local college which saw students working with the trades over a four-week period to gain work experience in various fields.
Werner De Klerk, Senior Site Manager, said: “All in all, it was a very good and informative day for the visitors, and we look forward to hosting an Open Doors event again next year."
